In 1728 he was send to Bohemia and was jailed there for 6 years for holding private religious meetings. In 1736 he was sent to South Africa as a Protestant missionary, where the Khoikhoi (an indigenous peoples) lived. He taught them to read, write, plant and sow, but they were reluctant to give up dancing and singing, which Schmidt punished by banning them from his Christian classes until they repented. Schmidt, although an unordained minister, started baptizing converts, a practice that the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) in Cape Town was opposed to. Due to mounting pressure, Schmidt suspended his duties, and he returned to Bohemia, never to return to South Africa. His actions laid the groundwork for the re-establishment of the Moravian Church in South Africa in the 1890’s. He died in 1785. The term Hottentot, which is now considered offensive, was historically used by Europeans to refer to the Khoekhoe.
