Description: I have accumulated over 4000 images of baseball cards and photos of the mid 1800's to the early 1900's. I will be offering my entire collection of images on ebay. 1887 Kalamazoo Bats (N690)45 Card SetReprintsThis set, issued circa 1887 by Charles Gross & Co. Phila., is one of the most difficult of all 19th Century tobacco issues. The cards measure a rather large 2-1/4" x 4" and feature a sepia-toned photograph on heavy cardboard. The player’s name and team appear inside a white strip at the bottom of the photo, while a small ad for Kalamazoo Bats cigarettes is printed at the very bottom of the card. Some cards carry an 1887 copyright line, but there are indications that some of the cards date from 1886 or 1888. The unnumbered set pictures players from four teams - two from New York (Giants and Mets) and two from Philadelphia (Athletics and Phillies). A few of the cards picture more than one player, and some Philadelphia cards have been found with an ad on the back offering various prizes in exchange for saving the cards. The set has been assigned the American Card Catalog number N690. This checklist is likely not complete. Players from the New York teams are significantly rarer than those of the Philadelphia teams. All of my sets come on sheets of cards unless you purchase the cut price.
