A: This is from the first series of Treasury bonds issued by the Weimar Republic following the disastrous 1922/23 hyperinflation. Created under the terms of the US$200 million 1924 International German Loan (Dawes Loan) agreement between Germany and the Allies to address Allied reparations claims and stabilize the German economy, the new Reichsmark replaced the hyper-inflated and worthless Paper Mark. One of the first steps taken to satisfy the terms of the loan was for Germany to commence regular payments. To do so required hard currency which was raised via the issuance of treasury bonds such as these. Making the connection between the bond and reparations plain, the bond's terms read, in part: No interest can be demanded on the loan redemption debt until the reparation obligations have expired. The start and amount of interest will be determined by Reich law. Following reunification in 1991, the Federal Republic of Germany made the last of it's Dawes and Young Loan reparations related payments in 2010. You will hold history in your hands.
