Founded in 1872, it operated for over 70 years before the changing environment for transportation rendered the company unprofitable and it liquidated. It was owned by the former Central of Georgia Railway Company for many years. For auction is a very rare brochure, dated Winter 1936-1937. It details various tour packages and transpiration services offered. Savannah and Sea Island, Georgia were tourist destinations for north easterners seeking to escape the winter weather for a warmer climate, and the Savannah Line was a desirable means for travelers to reach these destinations. Easy rail connections were available from Savannah to Brunswick, near Sea Island. The brochure offers tours ranging from 4 to 17 days. Tours included shipboard and land accommodations, transportation on the ship and train, transfers, and some meals. For $148, a person could sail from Boston to Savannah, take the train to Brunswick and then Sea Island, and stay at the Hotel Cloister. A 14-day tour to Savannah was $118, with a stay at either the Hotel De Soto or Hotel Savannah. Shorter tours operated between Boston and New York. Some 14 different tour packages are presented. For those not wanting a tour, the brochure provides local and one-way steamship fares. The 1-way, first-class fare between New York and Savannah was $27.00. There is also a schedule of rail fares from Savannah to points in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana and Tennessee, for those traveling further. One could bring his/her car on the ship, and a fare schedule is provided for that also. The Savannah Line's ships offered gourmet meals and snacks; activities such as shuffleboard and golf putting; dancing; and other recreations. Pets were permitted. The two ships on these routes were the S. S. City of Birmingham and the S. S. City of Chattanooga, which accommodated 200 passengers in both cabin-class and intermediate-class. The brochure contains a floor-by-floor diagram of these ships. In a historical note, the S. S. City of Birmingham was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat in 1942, with a loss of 2 passengers and 7 crew members. This brochure measures appx 9x4 inches unopened and opens to appx 24x18 inches. It is printed on a glossy paper stock. It is in very good condition, with no writing or markings, rips or tears. The only flaws I can identify are three small hole-wear-marks at fold points inside the brochure, but these are minor and do not detract from the appeal of the brochure or its historical value. A nice collectible item for any steamship fan or collector of items from Ocean Steamship and the Central of Georgia railroad.       Images sell!
