YOU'RE MORE THAN A NAME AND ADDRESS ----------- 4 ----------- USIC PUBLISHER Joe Davis has discovered a new star. In other words, Joe has hunches. And in this case, his hunch is already on the way and practically there. Frankie, Bing and the rest of the "lungers" wouldn't mind moving over a bit if they could meet this new singing sen- sation personally. Do you like guessing games? Neither do I. His name is Ārmen Camp-his age is twenty-five -and his personality is pleasant. And his voice? Just listen once! Sitting in an office of Joe Davis' Music Company, which incidentally has just launched Armen's first record- ing, I had to gulp a couple of times in order to realize that this well- mannered, quiet young man would be trampled 'neath saddle oxfords to- morrow, and swooned at by regiments ----------- 4 ----------- of adoring bobby-sockers. His story really started in 1936 when Armen made the acquaintance in his Philadelphia neighborhood of one guitarist who played in the key of C. Armen liked the guy, but he found it a little difficult to sing to a guitar that played solely in the key of C. "And I wish you'd say in your story that I owe plenty to that guy. He's responsi- ble for my learning a range, because I couldn't sing C before I knew him.' In the summer of 1937, Armen sang with Eddie Morgan's band on the big pier at Atlantic City. He made such an impression on the summer crowd that the President Hotel there grabbed him off for the 1939 and 1940 seasons. Presently, Armen found that he was just a home boy who wanted to be back in Philadelphia, eating his Mom's spaghetti and listening to her com- forting words. He insists that his mother has been his biggest inspira- tion and booster. In Philadelphia, he looked the radio situation in the eye and clicked. In no time, he was a popular vocalist there winning national recognition for network broadcasts. He sang with Joey Kearns' orchestra over WCAU and with Joe Frasetto over WIP and Mutual. "I loved what I was doing," Armen and earnest. "I loved singing, because I'd always sung. I never had a music lesson but I used to collect Caru- told me, looking very neat so records and study poise and t. breathing by listening to Nelson y Eddy and Lawrence Tibbett. I even took up the piano when I was twelve but when I found out that Dad had his heart set on my being a long hair,' I gave to it up." He chuckled softly. "You y can see what I'm in love with, in case you were getting ready to ask. I'm in ar love with music-not girls, but music! R.
