Description: RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS SEMINAL WORK ON TAEKWON-DO THE ART OF SELF-DEFENCE BY CHOI HONG HI. There are many later printings available, but this FIRST EDITION was published in Korea and bears the label of the North American distributor, O'Hara Publications on the copyright page. It lacks the dust jacket but is in GOOD CONDITION. Light green cloth boards with rubbed silver front board titling, clear black and silver spine titling. Very solidly bound with three markings to note. One is a previous owner purple overview of key concepts of Taekwon-Do on the second blank endpaper before the title page. Two is an inked name, Paris N. Johnson III (pretty sure it's "III"..) on the title page. I was able to find an obituary of Paris N. Johnson III online who died in 2024, and it stated, "... His intellectual pursuits led him to Duquesne University, where he earned a degree in accounting. Alongside his studies, Paris shared his love for TaeKwonDo by opening a studio, where he not only trained but also mentored countless students, leaving a lasting impact on their lives." One testimonial on the obituary stated, "He taught me discipline and honor. True honor. I studied at his route 8 American Taekwondo. I was being bullied at school. Well that changed after Paris Johnson's classes, although he was very strict about not using it as a bully.". Finally, the book's purple ribbon bookmark was marked at a page where there was marking on adjoining pages - see listing photo. Some of the marking was in the same purple marker as was the endpaper summary of key concepts. I did not see any further interior marks in a reasonably careful thumb flip through of the book. The 304 pages of the book are profusely illustrated with photos and includes a Note on the Author by Gen Duk Shin Choi, Ambassador to Germany, known by many as the founder of Taekwon-Do. The author led an effort to promote this martial art internationally. He was also a South Korean Army General. In 1972 Choi went into exile in Canada after the South Korean government objected to his introduction of the sport to North Korea. He later visited, and defected to North Korea. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT BOOK IN THE SPORT, AND THIS IS A RARE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. B13
