Bakalis (1938- ) was the popular superintendent of public instruction who was elected state comptroller in 1976. A new state constitution adopted in 1970 changed the gubernatorial election cycle to off-presidential years, so in 1978, Bakalis attempted to unseat Republican Gov. James R. Thompson, who had entered office in January 1977 after garnering 3 million votes in swamping the opposition the previous fall. Thompson easily defeated Bakalis, generating talk of a run for president in 1980, but Thompson was re-elected in 1982 and 1986 to become Illinois’ longest-serving governor. No manufacturer listed.
