These type of charts are scarse as they were actually used at sea for navigation. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Besancon' after 'Depot de la Marine'. Depot des Cartes et Plans de la Marine (1720 - present), often called the Depot de Marine, was a French hydrographic mapping organization founded in 1720. Much like the U.S. Coast Survey, the British Admiralty, and the Spanish Deposito Hydrografico, the Depot was initiated as a storehouse and distribution center of existing nautical and marine charts. Eventually the Depot initiated its on mapping activities in an attempt to improve and expand upon existing material. Some of the well known hydrograhers / cartographers in the development of Depot were Jacques Nicholas Bellin and Rigobert Bonne. The first a chart of the North Sea, showing the coasts of England, France, the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.The second sheet covers the northern half of the North Sea, from northern Denmark and England (from Edinburgh north, including Orkney and Shetland islands, to Sognefjorden in Norway. The map shows several banks, and includes depth soundings. Coastal towns are also indicated.Condition: Good, given age. Loosely attached to (modern cardstock) carrier, will ship w/o carrier. Right edge of the sheet browned and stained. Paper damage and paper loss in the right edge (restored) and some additional small tears in the right margin (with old restoration). A brown band in the left edge. Wormholes in the lower left, and four small holes in the lower right. Second sheet: Loosely attached to (modern cardstock) carrier, will ship w/o carrier. The right third of the sheet browned and the lower right dampstained. Lower left corner a little browned, some dampstaining in the top left margin. A cluster of tiny dark stains in the lower right margin corner. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
