The books are in good condition (clean blue cloth boards with gilt lettering to spines) with minor tanning to the pages, light age spotting to page edges. The novel portrays the relationships of a group of people in the cancer ward of a provincial Soviet hospital. We see them under normal circumstances, and also re-examined at the eleventh hour of illness. Together they represent a remarkable cross-section of contemporary Russian characters and attitudes. The experiences of the central character, Oleg Kostoglotov, closely reflect the author's own: Solzhenitsyn himself became a patient in a cancer ward in the mid-1950's, on his release from a concentration camp, and later recovered. Cancer Ward consists of two self-contained parts. When Part One was first published, its importance was immediately recognised and it became a best-seller. With the publication of Part Two the full scope and stature of the novel become clear. The action begins five weeks after the end of part 1. In the second Volume arguments take place in which the very principles of Soviet socialism are attacked and defended, perhaps because the author never envisaged its publication in his own country in his lifetime.
