He returned to Brooklyn in 1971, and worked as a photographer for community publications in New York, until 1978 when he became freelance. He co-curated the first Vietnam art exhibit in New York City and was named to the New York Vietnam Veterans Memorial Commission by then-mayor Ed Koch. With the Commission, he edited the book Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam. He was the associate producer for the Emmy Award-winning HBO documentary feature of the same name, which was based on his book.
