Description: Amazing record - It is only a matter of luck that I was able to gain hold of 1982’s Sky-Skating, often thought of as one of her best releases and an early example of a commercially unviable artist making their own recording. In contrast to X Dreams and The Perfect Release, Sky-Skating is almost exclusively dominated by Peacock’s simple voice and piano. Opener “Take Your Shoes Off” exemplifies this and its twinkling beauty sets the tone for the somewhat more complicated next two tracks. The title tune, which I did not exactly get on first listen, really is as gorgeous as anything this side of “Avalon”, and “Rap with the Trees” shows that protest music does not have to be violent.“Until Untrest Unties” is rather slight, but then the jazzy, but ethereal “Trust” returns to a delicate but oddly confrontational style before the beautiful poetry of “The Outness Queens’ Travelling Theme” shows Peacock in an amazingly gorgeous mood. “So Close Is Still Too Far” might be a little preachy despite its delicacy, and “Nothing Outside Us” rather slow-moving, but these are small quips about a very impressive record that deserves to be more widely heard.
