Antique oil painting. C. Bille:”Sailing by a mountainous coast”

Description: ARTIST: There are many renowned Danish artists, who are called “Bille”. One of the most famous seascape painters of them is Carl Bille, who lived from 1815-1898. Now, when I compare the signature in the painting to his in my art books, he seems like the best candidate. However, there’s another artist, who also painted seascapes, called Willy Bille (1889-1949). His middle name was “Carl”. He normally wouldn’t sign his paintings “C. Bille”, but the artistic style and the type of frame both fit better with him being the artist. There’s even the possibility, that it might be someone else altogether, so I’ve chosen to play safe and just name him ”C. Bille”. PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is a beautiful rendering of an old sailing ship sailing past a mountainous coast. Most likely, the scene is from somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea. I like the composition and there’s a sort of majestic feel to it, I think. I’d date it to somewhere between 1895-1925. Signed: “C. Bille” in the lower right corner. SIZE: With frame: 55 cm/21.7" * 47 cm/18.5". Without frame: 38,5 cm/15.2" * 30,5 cm/12". CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint. The frame has scratches and stains.
