HELEN HAFER OBITUARYHELEN LUTON HAFER An artist, age 88, passed away peacefully on May 18, at Seaview Care Home in San Clemente where she totally enjoyed her final months. She was born on July 27, 1914. Helen was born and raised in Orange, CA and was preceded in death by her husband Robert, in 1977. She and Bob were very well known in and around the county, as they were very busy with many activities. Helen was a member of many clubs and organizations. At the Presbyterian Church, she played the piano for the Sunday school classes, was a member of the Orange Women's Club, where she also modeled for many years, and was a collector of 100's of bonsai plants that she dug up and planted from much of the Southern CA area. Mainly she was know for her love of art, first studying it for many years. She entered many art shows, and won ribbons at every show. Next she ended up teaching art in her studio in the back of the house, and many spots around the county, included the YMCA in Santa Ana and Orange. She is a life member of the Laguna Beach Art Association, where she has had one man shows, has shown her work at the Laguna Beach Art Festival, and always had paintings shown in many galleries throughout Southern CA. Helen was the Director of Art for the Orange County Fair. In addition to those activities, she was always judging art, and giving demonstrations. Realism and impressionism would describe her oils. Many awards have come to her from the Laguna Beach Art Gallery, Whittier Art Association, Orange County Art Association, Torrance Art League, and the Palm Springs Art Association. Ike and Mammie Eisenhower purchased one of her paintings and the Nixon's had one of her paintings that was in the summer White House when it was in San Clemente. Her works are in many collections throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, Alaska, Australia, and of course Orange County. A gallery of her works are now at the Superior Gallery in Newport Beach. She was always a student herself and studied under Emerson Lewis, Burt Proctor, and Bennett Bradberry. Helen painted both brush and knife. She loved to paint nature, and landscapes and the sea were her favorites. Helen and Bob were both born and raised in Orange, and their parents were some of the original Orange ranchers in the area. Her sisters Ethel Jensen and Eva Larson also preceded her in death. Arrangements were made by Fairhaven Memorial Park and Mortuary in Santa Ana. Because of her love of the ocean, a private celebration of her life and a scattering of ashes will be at sea. Helen has many relatives and cousins remaining, but the closest that are living in the area, are her daughter Karen Hafer of San Clemente, brother Willard Luton of Capistrano Beach and nieces Gloria Fluor of Corona del Mar, Pauline Luton Hops of San Clemente, and Pauline Littlejohn of Orange.
