The Crown Optical Company was one of the plethora of lens and optical instrument producers which sprang up in Rochester. Crown was founded in 1906 by A. H. Hatmaker, and A. E. May to manufacture lenses. Early in WW1, they supplied 6x30 military binoculars to foreign governments, these being marked “Military Stereo” and “Crown Optical Co Rochester NY”. The factory was taken over by the US Government in 1917 for the war effort, becoming the Naval Gun Factory Optical Shop Annex. No more binoculars were produced with the name Crown after 1917, and the company was wound up in 1919. This item is marked on the outside edge: Crown Optical Co. Rochester NY 5 in E.F.
