DC, 1880s Click images to enlarge Description You are bidding on an original Stereoview/Stereograph SV card, titled: Carlo Franzoni's 1819 Marble Sculpture of Clio, the Muse of History, standing in a Winged Chariot atop a Clock, at the US Capitol, Washington, DC. by American Scenery, card # -, 1880's. Notes: Carlo Franzoni (1788-1819), sculptor from the marble region of Carrara. At the Capitol they executed statues, pediments, and classical architectural ornaments that Latrobe "Americanized" with regional flora and fauna: tobacco leaf and corncob capitals; a bald eagle instead of a Roman aquila. Carlo Franzoni carved the allegorical "Car of History" for the House Chamber depicting Clio, the muse of History, recording events from a winged chariot emblazoned with a profile portrait of Washington. Carlo Franzoni was a younger brother of Giuseppe Franzoni, who had died here in 1815. He was a sculptor of merit and bad achieved a reputation as a prominent sculptor before leaving Cararra. There was another brother, Emanuele Franzoni, also a sculptor, who had worked in connection with Carlo Franzoni. Emanuele would not come to this country, although at Carlo's death be was offered a position. So that with these two sculptors work commenced again in the same way. The most that we have of the work of Carlo Franzoni is a group or a figure piece known as The Car of History and as Franzoni's Clock. It stands upon the gallery front of the old gallery of Statuary Hall. formerly the House of Representatives. This clock represents a winged car, one wheel of which forms the dial of the clock, and a female figure, the Goddess of History, stands there with a tablet upon which, as the car moves over the world, she records the events as they occur. Carlo Franzoni died in this city on May 12, 1819, the year of the completion of that wonderful masterpiece. He left several children, and from those children we have most of the Franzonis now residents of Washington. For more info, click here. Most popular from 1850’s to 1930’s and they usually measure about 3 ½" by 7" (please see images).
