Description: Bixbyite is a fairly rare manganese iron oxide mineral. Mostly became known due to the isolated cubes in Rhyolite from Juab County in Utah, from the same area where the topazes are found. However, just as appealing, and with it's own unique character, and just as spectacular, are masses of Bixbyite crystals from the manganese mines in South Africa, specifically from the N' Chwaning II mine, in Kuruman, in Northern Cape, South Africa. Here is an excellent example of that material. At a glance it looks like black garnet.Melanite, but of course the weight and cubic form of the crystals, as well as the strong metallic luster, are givaways. It presents as a plate of crystals at the front, but the side and back features a few vuggy area's with crystals as well. Very good and esthetic example of this material. This specimen is 2 1/4 oz in weight, or 65 grams. The size is 2 inch x 1.2 inch x 1 inch. Please be advised, I ship with Ground Advantage.
