Description: The Shalako Ceremony is the most significant event of the year at Zuni Pueblo. It is a very complex event that lasts for about 40 hours. All activity is conducted in the Zuni language. Most people attending the event are aware of its significant but do not understand the proceedings, the dialogue, or the meaning of the songs. Nor to they understand the proper protocol. This book is intended to offer guidance on the event in order to provide a better understanding for non-Zunis. It is not disrespectful. I started attending Shalako at the age of four while my family lived in Zuni. Since that time, I have probably attended forty ceremonies. Growing up and living in the Indian trading business as I have, there have been countless occasions to witness Native American events, including religious ceremonies. I learned early on to maintain respect and dignity at such events. There is no other event of any tribe in North America that has the significance as does Shalako in my life. I have come to realize that because of oral tradition among the Zunis, many important aspects of their lives are being lost. For years we maintained a reference library that was utilized by Zuni elders when an important religious leader passed on with important oral history. This book is intended as a reference for people to use in understanding the event, protocol and significance of Shalako. There are no recent ceremony photos. Rather, those included are from the 23rd Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology published in 1901. While this is intended for reference, I think it would be disrespectful to display it during the Shalako Ceremony. There are photos of Zuni Village and the surrounding area.If you would like a special notation with an autographed copy, please note.
