Description: A complete set of 50 John Player & Sons "Straight Line Caricatures" tobacco cards Condition: Fine Normal 0 false false false EN-CA JA X-NONE This is a complete set of 50 “Straight Line Caricatures” tobacco cards issued by John Player & Sons in 1926 featuring vivid color relief halftone portraits by Alexander "Alick" Penrose Forbes Ritchie (1868-1938), cartoonist for Vanity Fair, the Sketch, the Bystander and many other magazines and journals. In his signature style satirizing the Cubist and Futurist schools of art, Ritchie’s portraits include leading political, literary, and celebrity features, among them from Asquith, Baldwin, Beaverbrook, and Lloyd George, to Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, George Bernard Shaw, and, of course, Winston Churchill. The cards measure 2.625 x 1.375 inches, each featuring a series number and biographical caption on the verso. Condition of the set is fine, clean and complete with no appreciable blemishes or defects. Churchill’s card, numbered 14 in the series, is captioned “Whatever his age, he will always be young. He has the audacity of youth, the courage of youth, and one might even say the impudence of youth. He has been called “turncoat,” but although he has changed his party, it has been in response to principle. A born fighter, with not a little of the adventurer’s spirit, the cause is less important to him than the fight. Many-sided, he has been soldier, journalist, author, and statesman. In appearance not impressive: scarcely of middle height, and neither carefully dressed nor very erect in bearing. An eloquent and persuasive speaker.” "Cigarette cards were first introduced in 1878 in the USA, but did not arrive in Britain until 1901, when the American Tobacco Company acquired the Liverpool factory of Ogden's. They were virtually killed off when paper rationing abruptly ended their use at the start of World War II... Churchill featured prominently on cigarette cards during the 1920s and 30s."
