Description: A very scarce signed 1st edition/1st printing of this 1995 novel from award-winning South African author and playwright Damon Galgut. Twice previously featured on the Booker Prize Shortlist (2003 for 'The Good Doctor ' and 2010 for 'In A Strange Room '), his latest novel 'The Promise ' made him a 3-time shortlisted author. A longstanding favourite for the prize, he was confirmed as the winner at a special ceremony on 3 November 2021. 'The Quarry ', published by Viking in London in 1995, 1st edition, medium modern hardback, [vi] + 193 pages. Flat hand signed by the author in black felt pen at the title page. Internally in fine condition, no ownership inscriptions or other markings, very light toning to page edges. Externally in near fine condition, squarely and tightly bound, sharp corners, worn and pushed foot of the spine and lower gutters, less wear at head of the spine. Dustjacket in near fine condition, retains good colouring all round, crinkling to foot of the spine and less so at the head of the spine to match the wear of the book; now housed in a removable protective plastic sleeve. ** A scarce signed Modern First, which has become significantly more collectable as a result of the author's Booker Prize win. You will find a few signed copies of the 2004 reissue edition for sale at prices higher than this starting point ** On a lonely stretch of road a nameless man commits a murder. The victim is a religious minister on his way to take up a post in a nearby town. The murderer decides to steal the dead man's identity only to discover that one of his first duties as the new minister is to bury a body that has just been found out near the quarry... Captain Mong, the head of the local police takes a close interest in the minister's work, although there is evidence linking young petty criminals to the crime. Mong knows it is the new minister who is guilty. But he bides his time, watching, listening, slowly circling his prey. Building to a climax that is almost too much to bear with the town's church ablaze, the Captain is compelled to pursue the murderer across the veldt, while his exhausted quarry struggles to make good his escape.
