About Boston Light Lighthouse Boston in theearly18th century was one of the nation's largest and busiest seaports. Merchants who were concerned about the safe arrival of their goods petitioned the General Court for a lighthouse at the entrance to Boston harbor. As a result, Boston Light was erected on the south side of Beacon Island - now called Little Brewster Island. Its oil lamps were lighted for the first time on the night of September 14, 1716, making Boston Light the first lighthouse in the nation. Boston Light quickly earned a place in maritime legend and lore. By 1720, its first two keepers had been lost in drowning accidents. Soon after, the tower burned when a lamp overturned. In 1776, the structure was complete destroyed by British forces during the Revolutionary War. The present lighthouse was built in 1783 on the same site occupied by the original tower. Initially 75 feet high, it was raised to 89 feet in 1859. The tower consists of a stone base topped by granite blocks. At ground level, its brick-lined walls measure 7 1/2 feet thick. The lantern assembly includes a 12-sided lens, two 1,500-watt lamps, and a 21-inch parabolic reflector. Boston Light's powerful beam is visible for 16 miles. Except for a period during World War II when its light was extinguished for security reasons, Boston Light has served continuously since 1783.
