EAPG Barberry Covered Compote by McKee & Brothers

Description: This wonderful covered compote is in the "Barberry" pattern made by McKee & Brothers of Pittsburgh. The production of design dates from the 1870s. Clear, heavy veined leaves with berry clusters in high relief are arranged in four groups around the base and cover. The bowl rests on a foot attached to the base with a wafer. There is a shell-shaped finial. The molding is good and sharp. This piece is 8" HOA to finial and bowl is 8-1/4" diam. The item is in good condition with minor flea bites around the rim and one small chip on the inside lip of the cover. This does not show when the lid is on. There is also some minor wear to the bottom of the foot and inside of the bowl. As with almost all items made of glass in the 19th and early 20th century: tiny bubbles, annealing lines, straw marks, mold roughness, slight lean, etc., is common and not considered damage to the piece. Most Early American Pattern Glass was made by hand in the United States starting in the 19th century and ending in the first quarter of the 20th century. I feel that this is part of our heritage when we as a country produced much of our glassware. Now most of it is made overseas and we seem to have left this craft behind.
