Description: Frederick Cooper ~ 42" TALL Hand carved wooden signed table lamp ~ circa 1940s Frederick Cooper founded his chicago-based studio in the 1920s with the idea of turning art into furniture, as is clearly evident in this beautiful example. The 42" tall table lamp has an ivory painted base with floral carved details into the 5" square base which has the F. Cooper signature carved by hand along the bottom of one of the faces of the base. Above the base sits a hand carved poppy flower painted a darker brown or gold. The poppy has carved floral fern detailing. The rest of the base is a turned wooden rod topped with a wide ring painted the same color as the poppy flower with similar hand carved floral details. In modern western culture, poppy flowers as a symbol are tied to remembrence of WW1 and historically they represent the wealth and prosperity that followed the war. The naturalistic details and artisinal craftsmanship are indicative of the lamp's traditional style. Based on the style, design, materials and craftsmanship of the lamp, the estimated production date is circa 1940s. I haven't found any definitive information about the signature, but it is definitely rare and should be of interest to collectors. The table lamp stands 42" tall when you account for the shade and 28.25" without the shade. The lamp shade is made of a durable and sturdy paper with a few creases and one minor tear. The style of the lamp shade is a straight drum that is 18" in diameter and 17" wide. The lamp shade is marked F.
