Description: Gorgeous Antique Georgian Satinwood Tea Caddy & Key c1800 An attractive George III period satinwood tea caddy, of rectangular form having a hinged lid enclosing two divisions with fully working lock and key. Tea was a precious commodity throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and the purpose of a tea caddy was not just to preserve the and extend the life of the precious tea leaves, but also to enable the owner to lock away those aforementioned valuable tea leaves, keeping them safe from the house staffs potential wandering hands. This is a stylish example, constructed from gorgeous shimmering satinwood that is free of decoration. The escutcheon is very simple and is purely gilt brass following the shape of the key hole. The interior contains two boxes to hold the tea. The interior boxes have lids that slide open, there are remnants of the zinc lining inside. These inner boxes can be lifted out of the caddy. This is an unusual example as there is no provision for a mixing bowl, it was most likely designed to be used to decant tea into smaller caddies for distributing and serving tea in a larger house. The underside of the caddy has a dark blue woven cover. The overall condition is good and it comes with a fully functional lock and key. The hinges are sound and the lids to the compartments fit, and overall the caddy has a pleasing appearance and colour. The body has many marks from use as you can clearly see in the images, it is beautifully authentic. The caddy measures approx. 26.6cm by 17.7cm by 15.1cm. For the collector of caddies/boxes this is both a fine and an unusual design, being free of decoration. Please see pictures for more details.
