In July 1804, sitting Vice President Aaron Burr, stung by a published criticism authored by Hamilton, challenged the esteemed statesman to a duel and fatally wounded him. Whitehead was also a client to Aaron Burr, of which Burr references several times within his papers. Contains one page with docketing on the verso, measures 8 by 6.75 inches, created in New York circa [1802], and in very fine condition with only toning. HAMILTON PROCLAIMS THE INNOCENCE OF AARON BURR’S CLIENT LESS THAN TWO YEARS BEFORE THEIR INFAMOUS DUEL Reads in full: “Queen County Common Pleas, Whitehead Cornwell & Isaac Hendrickson, Plea, And the said Whitehead by Alexander Hamilton his Attorney comes and defends the force and inquiry when and Says that he is not guilty of the said Trespass as the said Isaac above complains against him and as this he puts himself upon the County and the said Isaac likewise. Hamilton for Deft. Queen County sd. Whitehead Cornwell puts in his place Alexander Hamilton his Attorney at the suit of Isaac Hendrickson in the plea aforesaid.”
