Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) - born in 1917 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, left an indelible mark on American art with his narrative series of tempera paintings capturing the struggles, aspirations, and accomplishments of black Americans, particularly those who migrated from the South to the North. Raised in Harlem after his family's move in 1930, Lawrence developed a unique style characterized by vivid collage-like canvases with bold planes of color and symbolic elements reflecting African-American heritage. Notable among his series is "The Migration Series" (1940), which depicts the journey of African Americans from the rural South to urban centers in the North. Lawrence's working methods involved meticulous preparatory drawings and a systematic approach to applying colors, showcasing his commitment to storytelling and historical representation. His extensive career included teaching positions at institutions like Black Mountain College and the University of Washington in Seattle. Jacob Lawrence's contributions to art and his advocacy for racial and social issues remain pivotal in shaping the narrative of American history. He passed away in Seattle on June 9, 2000, leaving a lasting legacy reflected in the foundation he and his wife, painter Gwendolyn Knight, established for an art center in Harlem.
