" because today is the day when you may ' finally ' retire those old 1980 Capitol Theatre " FM " Analog Cassettes that you always adored ... as after all - how long have you been putting loving-wear on those two tapes ? 20, 25, maybe 30 years ??!? Well, today is clearly the time because here offered is the Beautifully-Remastered ! ( yes, in all of its original glory - and then some ) ... March 1st, 1980 ( 3/1/80 ) 3-CD Set of the Capitol Theatre Shows ( both ' Early ' & ' Late ' - naturally ... ). Just think " After Midnight " if you would like - because this is " 1980 " - and Spring Tour for J.G.B. at that ... in a matter of fact - only three ( 3 ) days later ! Always a " no-brainer " candidate for pro-release status - and the reason that we all were lucky enough to have this one for the last multiple-decade(s)+ is because it was recorded in the best state-of-the-art fashion - in the spirit of a " Radio release " on the WNEW radio network in New York City ! So tracking back in J.G.B. history ... this is obviously the reason that this one easily leaked - and quite naturally, it spread like wild fire ! Well - gladly, I'm here to tell you something ... it Never ! sounded quite like this. Period. I mean we are talking about a 3-CD fifteen ( 15 ) Track release that is just plain " Glorious ! ". I know, you already know how fine this performance is - but you ( probably, I assume ) haven't heard it like this. Listening to this one puts a smile on my face - a serious smile ... because this is the gateway-entry to my personal favorite period of the Jerry Garcia Band - that period being Late-1980 through Late-1984 / Early-1985. Exactly. The period that nobody wants to pay proper respect to - and why ? Well - let's just change that subject quick ... But, the fact is - this Spring '80 run that took place back east really allowed Garcia to settle into his " JGB-Own " in three distinct ways : 1st - this is the short window / period with Ozzie Allers on the Keys ! - and I personally think Garcia really ! fed off of this musically ... both Ozzie's personal sound - tone & style. And, such a ' different ' sound - courtesy of his state of the art synthesizer - best known as the Oberheim OB-X !!! I mean this is the '80's and Rock was changing-fast - this unique tonality alone had Jerry " smitten " in my opinion - and he obviously can really get after it - whenever he wants ! 2nd - This is a stripped-down quartet for the J.G.B. - and as an obvious result - you guessed it ... more space to jam - hear yourself more clearly through the monitors on stage - and more " jam-pockets " really present themselves - to be heavily penetrated ... by Jerry - naturally. 3rd - Let's just call it MXR Distortion+. This will probably resonate for many musicians out there - and especially players of the Axe ! - but Garcia really took a real fondness for the fire & power of his MXR equipment during this era - and was just learning how to control & truly maximize it via the output & distortion dials - i.e. " the tones ! ". Lots of ' accenting ' distortion used in the Late 70's ( '76 - '77 - '78 & '79 ) - but this is more along the lines of ' centerpiece ' use - in regard to attack. In my opinion, it was actually Randy Rhodes ! who really put this one on the Rock-Map - pretty ironic, huh ? Just think ... " Crazy Train ! " - Ha ! But, the fact is - this is the time where Garcia began to appreciate the " heavy " and these are still the way-early-days. The ' Beautiful ! ' early-days - where a certain ' type ' of Dead Fan is just Incredibly-Thankful ! that this happened. Hey ... I mean why not get a little heavier here - and after all ... it's the '80's ! - and Rock needs it !! Just like Jerry said himself one time ... " Louder is Better ! - at least on This Planet !! ". Well, it's still in the early stages here - still tame in tone, but even Russian Lullaby ! gets a little-touch of MXR D+. But just hit the photos provided - and take a look at this Set ... I mean Whoa !!?! The J.G.B. settled into such wonderful period - from a stand-point of the band itself ( J.G. - John Kahn - Ozzie Ahlers - Jonny DeFoncesca ) - and even Hunter himself for a couple of tunes ! But the material in the " overall " standpoint is settling in so fantastically - Sugaree - Catfish John - Sweet It Is - Sitting In Limbo - That's Alright Mama - Deal ! - Mission In The Rain - That's What Love Will Make Your Do - Russian Lullaby - Harder They Come - Midnight Moonlight & Dear Prudence ... Yum ! And even Tiger Rose & Promontory Rider with Hunter joining & taking the lead-vocal duties as well ! Heck, today couldn't really be any better considering that we now have J.G.B. March 1st, 1980 in Passaic, NJ in-hand !!! Wow ... for certain. Enjoy !!!!!
