Description: Rare original antique print from an 1870s illustrated journal. It depicts the newly built Central Synagogue (Congregation Ahawath Chesed Shaar Hashomayim) at 55th Street and Lexington Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. To the left of the picture is an article on the new Synagogue. Central Synagogue is a Jewish Reform synagogue that was built in 1870–1872 and was designed by Henry Fernbach in the Moorish Revival style as a copy of Budapest's Dohány Street Synagogue. It has been in continuous use by a congregation longer than any other in the state of New York, except Congregation Berith Sholom in Troy, New York and is among the oldest synagogue buildings still standing in the United States. Also on the page is a picture and article on the First Protestant Church in Rome. The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 15 inches (28 x 38 cm). The synagogue picture fills most of it, measuring about 4.5 x 6 inches, with a caption below it. The page is in excellent condition for its age. There is text/photos on the back of the print. See scan for an accurate view of the condition. This print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
