CRG from WEB: On Oct. 1, 1951, the world's first commercial transistor production line went live at the Western Electric plant on Union Boulevard in Allentown. Legions of mostly women, chosen for their manual dexterity, assembled the transistors. The product was a small black canister that contained a chip of germanium or, later, silicon, and wire connections on either side. The transistor, which lies at the core of electronic devices, led to portable radios, touch-tone phones, semiconductor chips and color television. Its invention is considered the precursor to the computer age.Locally, transistor production cemented Western Electric's role as an important manufacturer and a major employer for decades.
