Description: After a bit more than 60 years of collecting coins it is time to move the collection along. Here is a really nice 1792 B France 2 Sols (KM 603.3) from the Rouen mint (B). What makes this one especially interesting to me is that 1792 was the next to last year that these were issued as King Louis XVI was taken by the French Revolutionaries and executed for "treason" in January 1793. These bronze coins saw heavy circulation and are typically very worn, however, this is one of the better ones I have seen and is the second best one that I have ever owned. I worked in Europe for the last five years of my working life and made it a point to visit coin shops whenever I could. I love these large issues with their classic and historic design and the fact that they are rather large coins with a 32mm diameter and weighing in around 25g. On the obverse is King Louis XVI bust left with the legend worn from circulation but full “LOUIS XVI ROI DES FRANCOIS” with the year and mint below (1792-B). Looking closely with a glass, the obverse surface shows some minor distributed porosity while bust details still show in the hair and also the hair ribbon in the right field. There is an inclusion at the 12 o'clock position that appears to have occurred during the striking of the coin (my best guess). These coins also had a neat milled edge which I have attempted to capture in one photo. On the reverse is a really classic and historic design with a liberty cap above the fasces with the oak wreath in background. The 2 sols denomination “2 S” is on either side of the fasces. As the high point of the reverse design, the vertical lines of the fasces are normally worn away but on this one they are intact and defined. The wreath and lettering retain good detail. The reverse has evenly distributed minor porosity which is normal for these coins. The legend at the top reads, “LA NATION LA LE ROI” which is full and beneath is the not fully legible “L’AN 4 DE LA LIBERTE.” As everything needs to find a good home so my coins do not wind up in my "estate" sale, I am offering this one at a good price and will provide FREE SHIPPING to within the US.
