Description: Leslie Howard - Signed 1934 Playbill - World Premier "The Petrified Forest"1934 - 5 ½ x 8 ½ four-page (one sheet) Program honoring Leslie Howard’s appearance in “The Petrified Forest”. This program is from the December 1934 world première at Parsons Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut. (See the NY Times article in the scan section - Included with purchase)Signed by Leslie Howard and Peggy Conklin, on the rear cover, in a thick black wax pencil. Fold marks and wrinkling to the program. It appears that Leslie attempted to first sign on the gold surface of the front cover, but the wax pencil wouldn’t adhere. He then flipped it over and signed on the verso.Due to The Petrified Forest connection, this is an Important and historic item. “The Petrified Forest” is the play that made the career of a bit actor named Humphrey Bogart. He was so electric in the leading role as the villain, Duke Manatee, when the film version was to be made in 1936, Warner Brothers intended to cast the more bankable Edward G. Robinson as Duke; but Leslie Howard, whose contract gave him final script control, informed the studio that he would not appear in the movie version without Bogart as his co-star.The film made Bogart a star, and he remained grateful to Howard for the rest of his life. In 1952, Bogart and Lauren Bacall named their daughter Leslie Howard Bogart in honor of Howard, who had been killed in a plane crash when the German air force shot down his BOAC flight from Lisbon to Bristol during World War II. --------------------------------Read bio and background below. Please contact us directly with any questions.------------------------------Leslie Howard Steiner (3 April 1893 – 1 June 1943) was an English actor, director and producer. He also wrote many stories and articles for The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Vanity Fair and was one of the biggest box-office draws and movie idols of the 1930s.Active in both Britain and Hollywood, Howard is probably best remembered for playing Ashley Wilkes in Gone with the Wind (1939). He had roles in many other notable films, often playing the quintessential Englishman, including Berkeley Square (1933), Of Human Bondage (1934), The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934), The Petrified Forest (1936), Pygmalion (1938), Intermezzo (1939), "Pimpernel" Smith (1941), and The First of the Few (1942). He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for Berkeley Square and Pygmalion.Howard's World War II activities included acting and filmmaking. He was active in anti-German propaganda and shoring up support for the Allies—two years after his death the British Film Yearbook described Howard's work as "one of the most valuable facets of British propaganda". He was rumoured to have been involved with British or Allied Intelligence, sparking conspiracy theories regarding his death in 1943 when the Luftwaffe shot down BOAC Flight 777 over the Atlantic (off the coast of Cedeira, A Coruña), on which he was a passenger. All autographed items are guaranteed authentic for life.
