Description: MARTIN JOHNSON HEADE - CHARCOAL & CHALK on PAPER - THE NEWBURYPORT MARSHES 1860s This antique charcoal and chalk drawing on paper is not signed but is attributed to Martin Johnson Heade. This work is extremely similar to two charcoal and chalk drawings by Heade that are in private collections as well as another charcoal and chalk drawing that is in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (see my last three pictures). These examples are from the book AMERICAN LIGHT THE LUMINIST MOVEMENT by John Wilmerding. The drawing measures approx. 8 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches and is set in a 17 x 24-inch black wooden frame. The drawing had a large tear on the left side which the previous owner had professionally restored. The work of art came from the estate of Dr. Herbert Jay Smokler a Connecticut collector. Dr. Smokler told me he acquired it from his close friend Huntington Hartford.Hartford owned an extensive art collection much of which was housed at the Gallery of Modern Art which he built on Columbus Circle in New York City in 1964. As with all my Ebay items I am starting this auction at $9.99 with NO RESERVE!
