Description: Medal Without Barby Richard Blaker ____________________________________________________________ About This Book Medal Without Bar' is one of the very best novels of the Great War. It tells the story of Cartwright, a middle-aged man who enlists in 1914. We follow him through training and into the artillery and hard fighting on the Western Front. A fine novel that is now only recently becoming acclaimed, although not that well known, based on the author's experiences with a 4.5-inch Howitzer battery in France, and giving realistic vision of life and work in the battery, emphasising comradeship and sacrifice. Falls awards a star and notes โone of the longest and most detailed of war novels... gives perhaps the finest picture yet painted of life in a field-artillery battery. He is sentimental in that shame-faced British manner which is really more sentimental than Latin emotionalism, but his portraits are by no means necessarily false for that. His attitude to the war itself is sane and just. This is one of the books which could not possibly have been written save upon the foundation of experience. There aren't many better novels about the Great War than this. considered one of the first major works to be based on an author's personal combat experiences. Blaker (1893-1940), a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery during the war, was gassed while serving as a forward observer and never fully recovered. Although he turned out a dozen or so books in the 1920s and 1930s and even did a bit of screenwriting About This Book This book is difficult to describe. Firstly the defects - The cover is a little dirt ingrained combined with some foxing scattered throughout the book, consistent with a nearly century old book. There are library stamps on the ripped, but repaired and creased free front end paper. Both front and rear end papers have been replaced with marbled papers. The title page is also stamped for the Ideal Travelling Library and additionally adds their type written rules. The cover is a little grimy and the dust jacket is a facsimile of a repaired dust jacket. And now to the positives - The book block, apart from the preliminary pages is in good condition, the book block is stitched, tight, square. Closed tear on one page with no loss. Nice facsimile dust jacket mylar protected. Please check pictures and don't hesitate to ask if you have any queries! 179
