Description: 'Oldest District' National Metropolitan Bank (originally in Rhodes Tavern) Washington D.C. 1873 Counter Check for $325. The Bank of the Metropolis, which later became the National Metropolitan Bank opened during the War of 1812 (in March of 1814) in the historic Rhodes Tavern, as the British set about torching all the buildings of our Capitol city. But the tavern/Banking house was saved by Sarah Sweeny, who gave 'favors' to certain British officers (for which in later years she was rewarded). At the end of the war, the bank lent the government more than $100,000 to rebuild the areas destroyed by the British. In 1836 President Andrew Jackson made this bank the depository for Federal funds after he refused to extend the charter of the Bank of the United States. .............................................................................................
