Description: FEATURED: An amazing original and very scarce 1800's Nautical painting, "CROSSING THE LINE", a famous Sailor's ritual celebrated by sailors and ships world-wide, where sailors, 'Pollywogs', who have never crossed the Equator ( 0 degrees latitude) are sent through a ceremony on-board by 'Shellbacks', the most experienced sailors, and King Neptune and his court, a initiation of sorts into the Ancient Order of the Deep, and celebrating this first Equatorial crossing of the Pollywogs on board. Here we see that this has indeed turned into a party of sorts, with King Neptune and his consort, Amphitrite, drinking and watching while the blindfolded seaman is doused in a tub and hassled by the merry crew. Some of the crew have decided to strip down & paint themselves up as King Neptune's court, and are having a fine time making this an occasion the poor Pollywog sailor will not forget. From the look on everyone's faces, it seems that this ceremony was a welcome relief from routine boredom onboard a sailing ship out in the middle of an ocean, many years ago when there was no entertainment onboard but the crew and bottles of rum. We do not know the artist, where this was painted or the ship involved, but whoever the artist was, had a great eye for capturing a moment in time, the personalities of everyone there, the ship itself, and the atmosphere of the event. Very much in the style of British artist George Cruikshank, this fantastic artwork, perhaps by a sailor on board this ship or a sailor who recalled such a ceremony in past voyages, is a wonderful example of Nautical Folk Art to have in your collection and enjoy for many years to come. Measures: Painting itself is 3.5 inches X 5.5 inches, mounted with old glue onto old tan paper, which is 6.5 inches X 4 7/8 inches. This was purchased in this state from an Estate of an Art collector in Ohio, not framed/matted. Artwork is done on paper, with ink and gouache watercolors. Not signed/ dated, believed to be 1800's and thought to be either American or British in origin. A great piece of very collectible Nautical Folk Art, very fun, frisky and captivating. Certainly something that everyone who sees this will love and enjoy, and comment on in your home. We pack your valuables with care for safety and security.
