Description: Original 1891 antique color lithographed map of Boston, printed more than 130 years ago. The image area measures 30.2 x 26.5 cm [12" x 10½"], and the map shows streetcar routes, railroad stations, canals, ferries, and "places of amusement," including two of Boston's early baseball parks: The South End Grounds (73 in the legend key), off Columbus Avenue south of the Boston & Providence Railroad and east of the Back Bay Fens. Also known as the Grand Pavilion, this ballpark had opened on May 25, 1888, and was destroyed in the Great Roxbury Fire of May 15, 1894. The Brotherhood Grounds (74 in the legend key), on Congress Street east of the Fort Point Channel. It had been built for the Boston team of the Players League in 1890 and lasted until 1896, when the owners dismantled the grounds and built warehouses on the site. Other details on the map include hotels, public buildings, parks, churches, and cemeteries. Among the specific named places and features are the Old Colony Railroad, South Boston Insane Asylum, Uphams Corner, Craigies Bridge, Longwood, Charlestown, Bunker Hill Monument, the Fitchburg Railroad, Dorchester Bay, Aspinwall, Harvard Bridge, the Fenway, Dorchester Bay, Maverick Square, Mass. General Hospital, the Boston & Maine Railroad Depot, the Winnisimmet Ferry, Pioneer Dry Dock, Constitution Wharf, and the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. The map was engraved and printed by the Matthews-Northrup Co., Buffalo, New York, and issued in Library Atlas of Modern Geography, published by D. Appleton & Company, New York. It is dated 1891 in the lower margin. It is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. Condition: It is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.
