The image area measures 9 x 15.2 cm [3½" x 6"]. It was lithographed by Saron, Major & Knapp, 449 Broadway. It was published in the 1861 edition of Valentine's Manual, more formally known as the Manual of the Corporation of the city of New York, compiled by David Thomas Valentine. The lithograph is titled "The Old Hopper-House, 2nd Ave. 83rd St. 1860." In addition to the house, barn, and streetcar, the view also shows two passersby and a pair of pigs foraging in the front yard. The house itself dates to the early 18th century and takes its name from Yellis Hopper, a previous owner who'd lived there with his wife and five daughters. This original, authentic antique print offers a fascinating look back at this small piece of New York City's Upper East Side as it was more than 160 years ago.
