Description: ~ Welcome to Antiquus Gallery ~Medium: Hand-colored engravingFull sheet size: app. 6.25" x 9"Author / Source: Paxton's Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants, Published: Orr & Smith, London, 1836.About work / author: Sir Joseph Paxton (d. 1865) was an English gardener, architect, engineer and Member of Parliament, best known for designing the Crystal Palace and for cultivating the Cavendish banana. The early 19th century was a time of particular interest in flowering plants, and a variety of publications attempted to catalogue the ever-growing number of known species. Writing in the introduction of vol. 1, Paxton comments that by 1834 nearly 30,000 species had been recorded. Issued in monthly parts, Paxton's Magazine of Botany was his very successful attempt to bring to the notice "of most flower cultivators" the very best of these species, "all shown natural size, beautifully coloured, from original drawings."
