Description: The necklace is 24 inches in length - not including the medallion. Trade beads are approximately 11 mm in width. They vary in length from 13-18mm. Colors of the larger trade beads are yellow, reddish-orange, and translucent blue, there are also some smaller red ones. Necklace is strung on leather cording and wrapped/tied at back. The medalist was Thomas Ottley of Birmingham marked on the lower front. The obverse at the rim reads HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS PRINCE ALBERT. Prince Albert's bust is in the center, inside a wreath. The reverse at the top rim reads The Building For The Great Exhibition in London 1851. In the center it shows the exhibition building. Under the building it reads: Proposed By H.R.H. Prince Albert - Designed by Joseph Paxton Esq. F.L.S. - Errected by Fox, Henderson & Co. - Dimensions - Length 1848 Feet, Width 456 Feet - Height of Principal Roof 66 Feet - Height of Transept 108 feet - Glazed Surfact 900000 feet - Occupies 18 Acres - Of Ground. This medal is listed in the British Commemorative Medals book by Eimer as #1461. Many of these were either produced or made into barware sets, and the use of them as pendants in necklaces, especially trade bead necklaces in most rare - but other medallions have been commonly used as pendants in trade bead necklaces.
