In October 1912 he joined regular military service and entered the War in 1914 as a Corporal fighting at the Western Front in a machine gun unit. In 1916 he was seriously wounded. After WW1 he returned to his home town near Friedrichshafen where he worked as a stoker with the rail road company for nearly 11 years. After a short time at Maybach Motorenwerke Friedrichshafen he started his job as a machinist with the crew of LZ127 'GRAF ZEPPELIN' where he became position of Fahrmeister. He took part in the 1. America Flight in 1928, Flight around the world in 1929 and Arctic (Polar) Flight 1931, as well as all flights of the LZ127 and LZ130.
