From Ralph Cobb's excellent World Bayonets website, Remington made 100,000 of this 16-inch type for France in 1915-16. Remington made their No. 5 military rifle in large numbers for Mexico and other countries. Cobb says that the 16-inch type is most often associated with France. But lacking a French serial number, this piece could have other origins.The bayonet is in very good condition. The blade is straight and smooth. It has no nicks and doesn't look to have been sharpened. There's light staining to the bright metal finish. The wood grips are very good. They show only minor signs of handling and remain solid. The guard and pommel show more age but are not rough or pitted. The pommel is not battered from use as a hammer.The blade is marked “REMINGTON ARMS Co. ILION. N.Y”.The scabbard is in very good condition. The bright blue finish is smooth and shows only minor marks and wear. There is only one very small dent at the front about two inches up from the tip. See the last photo. The leather hanger has traces of the black finish but is mostly brown. The leather remains in very good condition, pliable, not dry or cracked. The stitching is intact. Apply a little leather preservative to keep the piece in great condition.
