Description: For the Baseball Hobbyist. . . 19th Century Baseball Greats ~ 1876-1881 Robert T. "Bobby" Mathews ~ *3rd Card Ever One of 20 Commemorative Cards issued by Scholle & Scholle, LTD in 1987 This interesting card comes from a set of "20 cards from the first game to the founding of the Majors" - as advertised on its retail packaging. Issued by Scholle & Scholle, LTD in 1987, it measures the modern standard of 2-1/2" by 3-1/2" on sturdy cardboard and features "unretouched 19th century masters (text and art)". The card is not numbered. *Only two cards of earlier vintage (1887 Kalamazoo Bats and 1887 Old Judge) than this one are listed in the comprehensive Beckett Baseball Card Alphabetical Index. Therefore, we believe this to be the subject's third card ever. At his retirement, Bobby Mathews was baseball's winningest pitcher with between 297 and 300 wins despite missing the 1878 and 1880 seasons! Will there ever be a call from Cooperstown? The back carries an in-depth look at the subject written from a late 19th century perspective which adds a bit of character to this fine card. Condition: Near-Mint - check the high-resolution scans, front and back; this is the only example of this card we currently have in stock. The back of the retail packaging which housed this and the other 19 cards states: Going to the Game Today ~ August 1876 President U. S. Grant is in the White House dealing with the loss of 265 men, including General George Custer at Little Big Horn, Montana. Alexander g. Bell has been in the news with a new device he calls "The Telephone". We are going to a National League game ... Have 25 cents in your hand for front gate admission. The program today is loaded with super stars! Pitcher AL SPALDING, from the prairies of Illinois, is on a pace that could generate 45 wins this season. There will be talk int he stands of pitcher ROBERT MATHEWS throwing the ball in such a way that it curves in flight to the plate. We'll be seeing CAP ANSON, the Iowa born giant, who is probably the best in the game. Anson will come to the plate today batting just over .350. Watch carefully! No fielding gloves of any kind will be seen ... these guys have hands of steel. Bats are just little hardwood poles. A "homer" is a near miracle. The league leader has four ... or maybe five; the idea is to "slap" the ball where the "Fielders Ain't". You will hear batters calling for high or low pitches. You aren't hearing things. It's in the book ... the rule book. Pitcher Spalding will be delivering high or low down 45 feet from pitching rubber to plate. Today's umpire, William McLean, will be calling about a yard off the catcher's right schoulder. He is impressive in his stove pipe hat ... impressive to the players, too. McLean is a world class boxer with a notorious temper. Gat ready for this one ... any foul ball caught by a fielder on one bounce, the batt is "Outa There." Enjoy the day. You will never see batter!!! _______________________ Important: Shipping Information Our goal has always been to keep shipping costs low.
