Description: This non-fiction big book is adorable! It is in very good shape, considering how long I have had it! There is just a little bit of tackiness, on some of the pages, due to the use of highlighting tape. I used this book in my kindergarten classroom, during the month of January, when we were doing a unit on polar animals. My students absolutely loved it! This item is clean and comes from a smoke free home. The book measures 10.375" x 15.5". The author is Sonia W. Black and the illustrator is Turi MacCombie. The copyright is 2002 and the publisher is Scholastic. This book is a Scholastic "Hello Reader". It is Level 1, Science for preschool - grade 1. The following is a synopsis of the plot of the book.: This book is about the journey polar bears go on from the moment they are born. In this book, a mother polar bear, who has waited in her den for the birth of her twin cubs, teaches them how to hunt and recognize danger. When they are grown, they set out on their own. This book is great for beginning readers. This interesting informational book traces the habitat and lifestyle of polar bears, from the birth of twin cubs, through their infancy, until they leave their mother to seek mates of their own. This educational story introduces early readers to basic knowledge about polar bears with its fun rhyming text and cute illustrations. Children will enjoy reading to understand the life cycle of this specific animal and what they experience. This big book also comes with a "Big Book Idea Booklet". This guide is designed to help adults and children get the most out of the Big Book. In the pages of the booklet there are ideas for before, during, and after reading discussion, as well as 3 rereading approaches to enhance children's literacy learning ("Phonics", "Cloze Reading", and "Picture Clues"). But, the learning experience need not stop when the book has been closed. Adults can continue children's reading experience with activities related to the concepts in the book. Included in this guide, adults will also find 2 ideas for extending children's learning through language arts and literacy ("Exclamation Points", and "Polar Poetry"). Also found are cross-curricular activities, including one each for social studies ("Map Investigations") and science ("Mind Your Mammals"). And, for additional literature experiences, there is a list of 11 related books on the last page of the guide. The ideas in the booklet will provide adults with the tools needed to turn the Big Book into an integrated curriculum piece filled with rich learning opportunities. This particular Big Book can help to reinforce several literacy skills. Skills incorporated into this story include the following: connecting spoken language to print, using picture clues to decode print, increasing phonemic awareness through rhyme, understanding use of exclamation points, expanding awareness of action verbs, and building vocabulary. Big Books are a wonderful way to get children excited about language, literacy, and learning! They get little ones started on the road to reading. The large illustrations and print size allow adults to model and reinforce early reading skills, and allow children to participate in a shared reading experience. When children move from being observers and listeners to becoming active participants in the reading process, their enjoyment of the story increases along with their command of early literacy skills. And, as children gain confidence, they also gain a love of reading and literature that can last a lifetime. This item is rare and very hard to find! I have not seen any others currently selling online. This book would make a wonderful addition to a preschool, kindergarten, or 1st grade classroom! It would also be great to have in a household with young children! I am hoping to find it a good home.
