Edward's constant ruffle at her typing and spelling mistakes at first only seem mildly intimidating. But when Lee follows his instructions - which stem from both his own fears and his sense of order - punitive actions escalate: beatings, bondage and much more accumulate. Secretary is walking a fine line: there is a lot of subtle humor in the sadomasochistic actions, without letting them degenerate into a pure gag. Lee's and Edward's mutual aspirations are taken seriously without being self-righteous or puffy.
