Description: A nicely preserved example of an high-end luxury fine binding by New York's Stikeman & Co. Striking full green morocco leather, inventive ribbed fleur-de-lis gilt decorated spines, covers elaborately decorated in gilt, gilt dentelles, wonderful green and blue morocco doublures with gilt rules and designs to front and back covers, and silk morie endpapers. Gilt stamp binders signature at bottom of inner covers. The book itself is in very good condtion. George Barrie & Son published L'Assommoir, one of Zola's Rougon- Macquart novels (which also include Nana and Germinal) in 1900 in a limited edition of 1,000 copies printed on Japanese vellum, with exquisite, finely printed etchings in two states (one with etchers' remarques) by Charles-Theodore Deblois, Claude Faivre, Nicolas-Lucien Quarante, and Ricardo De Los Rios after paintings by Alcide-Theophile Robaudi. These copies are numbered #102. The vellum remains crisp and clear, with no markings inside. Exterior is very good, with the leather still luxurious and rich, and just a bit of wear to corners and top of hinges (binding is still strong and secure). The Wonderful pieces from the U.S. heyday of luxury printing and bookbinding.
