Description: This totem is large 25'' tall and 17'' wide, its coloring is minty, the well known cut signature of SAM WILLIAMS , who died at 80 in 1940. The yellowed paper on the wing described this as ''THUNDERBIRD TOTEM POLE' The top figure is the thunderbird . the medicine-man and native of the Northern tribes believe that he is a powerful god, under whose protection comes brotherhood, peace and plenty. He is the Sagilie Tree (creator god) and when he flaps his wings and blinks his eyes, it rains and storms : thus the evil spirits are driven to the lonely mountain ranges .Bottom figures is Chet-woot the Bear who is respected by all Indians for his strength and cunning.Sam Williams is the grandfather of the Williams family that still carve today out of the west Seattle, 'OLD CURIOSITY SHOP'' ,Sam came to Seattle in 1899, he is Native peoples from the Nuu-chah-nulth tribe.
