Jalapa, Enero 10 de 1848 [complete text, printed in gilt on black card stock, the text enclosed within a wide ornamental border] Publication: Jalapa: 1848 Description: Death notice printed in gilt with elaborate type on a black card, 3 3/8 x 5 inches, the general's name printed in much larger even more elaborate display type. As a colonel under Santa Anna, Morales (1802-1847) served as field commander for Mexican forces at the Alamo and Coleto in 1836, and as a Major General in the Mexican War, he served as commandant of Veracruz, abandoning the city when surrender seemed inevitable; he died shortly thereafter. Accompanied by a generic Mexican printed death notice (5 x 3 ¼ inches) from the same period, featuring a cut of a grieving woman at an elaborate cemetery grave marker. The text of the card roughly translates as : "On the 23rd day of the past month, General Don Jun Morales, (Rest in Peace), died in Atlisco. His Wife, Brothers, Relatives, Friends and people of esteem send to you their sentiments, begging you to do for his soul the suffrages dictated by his piety; by whose favor they will live recognized. Jalapa, January 10, 1848." Both items very good. For the pair, Seller ID: 67974 Subject: Americana We are a Washington, D.C. based bookstore in business for over 40 years.
