The genetic makeup of a human population must he treated as a major factor in any biological, medical, or social study of that group. This is the underlying premise of The Genetics of Human Populations, the authors of which describe themselves as "geneticists who are interested in the study of the interaction between heredity and environment:' This important work provides the reader with a sound introduction to the mathematical techniques useful in this area. The book presumes only a minimal background in mathematics, but the authors have provided additional material for readers with more extensive training in mathematical analysis. The Genetics of Human Populations is the most advanced and comprehensive treatment of this subject published to date; it will surely find its place as one of the standard teaching and reference works. A distinguished researcher, L. L. Cavalli-Sforza is now Professor of Genetics at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He received his M.D. from the University of Pavia in 1944 and was awarded an M.A. by the University of Cambridge in 1950. Since 1954, Dr. Cavalli-Sforza has been engaged primarily in research into population structure, with respect to consanguinity, drift, migration, racial mixture, differentiation, and evolution. W. F. Bodmer studied for his doctorate in statistical and population genetics under Sir Robert A. Fisher, from whom he derived much professional inspiration. He took a B.A. in mathematics at the University of Cambridge in 1956 and, after redirecting his work to the field of genetics, attained his Ph.D. there in 1959. He was a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at the Stanford University School of Medicine in 1961-1962. Since 1970, he has been Professor of Genetics at the University of Oxford. He is a member of the Royal Society. W. H. Freeman and Company nthdegree books
