Appleton and Co., New York This is an original 1895 black and white photogravure of a painting by Franz Hals. One of the most brilliant portrait painters whose fame has comedown to us, Franz Hals, was born in 1584 at Antwerp. He studied in Haarlem, where the remainder of his life was passed, and where he died in 1666. While there are deep shadows on the record ofhis life, lie stands pre-eminent among the Dutch painters, and his works are to be found in all the leading museums. A certainty of knowledge and a sureness and freedom of brush work, with strength of conception and powerful individuality, are his striking characteristics.
