The Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust: The Merlin in Perspective

Description: Due to increasing problems with US customs we are no longer able to dispatch books to the USA. "The Merlin in Perspective - the combat years" by Alec Harvey-Bailey The Merlin is one of the few aero engines that is as well known as the aircraft it powered. This book charts the technical development of the Merlin from its launch as a private venture in 1933 to its final form where it produced over twice its original power output. With plentiful technical illustrations and photographs the text describes the main design features and deals with the technical problems that were encountered during early development. Alec Harvey-Bailey was in charge of defect investigation on both Merlin and Griffon engines during WW2 and as a consequence his narrative is a personal account of the effort that went in to develop the Merlin's reputation as "the pilot's friend". When production ceased over 168,000 Merlins had been produced, including over 55,000 by the Packard Motor Company in Detroit. The book contains photographs of some of the well known and less well known Merlin powered aircraft and technical information on all Merlin marks is presented in tables for reference. This book was first published in 1995 and reprinted in 2003 with minor additions (204 pages, 100 photographs and illustrations) by The Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust as part of the Historical Series Available new from stock.
