Description: Buddha from Tibet - Provenance- I purchased this from Xanadu Gallery in 2008 in San FranciscoAge - it was sold to me as late 18th or early 19th centuryCondition-The gilt has worn off in some sections-The piece is in great shape and is heavy. It looks like some restoration work has been done on the face. This is the way I purchased it. The robe is only gilded on the braid. This is usual practice on bronze Buddhist images. Antique Tibetan Medicine Buddha partially gilt image. There is gilding over his body as well as the healing flowers & the braiding of the Buddha’s robe. The hair is a very dark blue, almost black. The facial features are delicate & excellently painted. It is called the Medicine Buddha because he is depicted holding a healing medicinal flower in his right hand & his left hand holds a jar which also contains the same healing flower. This Buddha is called upon during illnesses to help speed the healing process. This Buddha’s Sanskrit name is Bhaisajyaguru which means “Medicine Master” or “Master of Remedies”. The sculpture measures 8” in height. The base is 5” X 4” in diameterPlease look at the pictures carefully-The item is heavy and old and the condition does reflect that
